Unable to obtain a valid reading from the scale

When using a USB to Serial Adapter to connect to a scale indicator, you may intermittently get the following error when attempting to read the scale:

Unable to obtain a valid reading from the scale.  Error: The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.

This can be resolved by adjusting the USB Transfer Sizes from the default value of 4096 to something lower eg. 2048.  The setting can be found in the device manager properties for the USB Adapter, Port Settings, Advanced.
